You can't make soap without lye. Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye, plays a crucial role in the soap-making process through a chemical reaction called saponification. This reaction transforms oils or fats into soap. During saponification, sodium hydroxide reacts with the fatty acids present in oils, breaking them down into glycerin and soap molecules. The beauty of the saponification process is that no lye remains in the finished product. By carefully controlling the proportions of oils and sodium hydroxide, soap makers ensure that the resulting product is safe and well-balanced for use. The glycerin produced during saponification is a valuable component, contributing to the soap's moisturizing properties. The thorough and meticulous execution of the saponification process is key to crafting high-quality, handmade soap.
So much of what we enjoy about soap is the smell. Here at Trail n' trees we use two types of fragrance to add that special touch. One of these is essential oils. Ideally, all soap could be scented with essential oils. Essential oils are derived directly from the plant, without any other ingredients. However, there are limitation as to how they hold up in natural process of soap becoming soap. Many scents don't survive. That leads us to fragrance oils. Fragrance oils allow for a broader spectrum of fragrances that might not be available or feasible through natural essential oils alone. Fragrance oils are a blend of synthetic AND natural substances. Perhaps not as "natural", but all fragrance oils used in Trails n' Tress soap are 100% phthalate-free and DO NOT contain cancer-causing ingredients that require a Proposition 65 warning in the state of California. Regardless of what state you're in- this is good news!
